The Tennessee Volunteers have bolstered their 2025 basketball recruiting class with the addition of French guard Clarence Massamba. Standing at 6-foot-5, Massamba brings a blend of international experience and athleticism to Rick Barnes’ program.
International Experience and Development
Massamba’s basketball journey includes two seasons at The Rock School in Gainesville, Florida, where he averaged 13 points and five rebounds per game during the 2023-24 season. His performance helped lead the Lions to a state championship, showcasing his ability to contribute significantly on both ends of the court. Following his time in the U.S., Massamba returned to France to play for AS Monaco’s U21 team, where he averaged 9.8 points, 2.8 rebounds, 1.2 assists, and 1.3 steals per game, shooting 45% from the field and 34% from three-point range.
Fit Within Tennessee’s System
Head coach Rick Barnes expressed enthusiasm about Massamba’s addition, highlighting his versatility and basketball IQ. Barnes noted, “He is a long, athletic, versatile guard who can really attack in the open court. He is good with the ball in his hands, yet also possesses the ability to excel without it.” Massamba’s defensive prowess and ability to play both on and off the ball align well with Tennessee’s emphasis on perimeter defense and transition offense.
Recruiting Journey and Decision
During his recruitment, Massamba considered programs such as Ohio State, Seton Hall, and Virginia Tech. However, he felt a strong connection with Tennessee’s coaching staff, particularly with Coach Barnes. Massamba stated, “I could feel a connection with the coaching staff… I could feel how happy he was to have me around.” This genuine interest played a pivotal role in his decision to commit to the Volunteers.
Impact on Tennessee’s 2025 Recruiting Class
Massamba becomes the fifth member of Tennessee’s 2025 recruiting class, joining five-star forward Nate Ament, four-star forward DeWayne Brown II, four-star guard Amari Evans, and three-star guard Troy Henderson. His international experience and skill set add depth and diversity to the class, enhancing the team’s competitiveness in the SEC.
