Callum Wilson has opened up on what it is really like to be Alexander Isak’s deputy at Newcastle United.
When Alexander Isak first arrived and became Newcastle’s most expensive signing, he dovetailed brilliantly with Callum Wilson. The duo took it in turns to start, whilst also flourishing alongside each other.
Over the past couple of seasons, Isak has established himself as Newcastle United’s starting striker. He is now recognised as one of the world’s best goalscorers, netting 25 goals in 2023/24 followed by 27 goals in 2024/25.

In contrast, Wilson has mainly been on the bench when fit. The 33-year-old has endured multiple injury issues, and is no longer the influential player he once was at St James’ Park.

Wilson has seen his role change at Newcastle United, and now the number nine has spoken about what it is like to know he is Eddie Howe’s second choice striker.
The England international has appeared on the High Performance podcast, with Wilson admitting that Isak has taken his game to ‘another level’ as of late.
“You go from being first choice striker to then being second choice striker,” he said.
“Every game there is not even a contest on who starts at the moment, and rightly so. In my absence over the last 18 months, Alex has just gone to another level which is fantastic for the team. It’s helped us improve so much.
“Then obviously my role changes and you have to put your pride and ego to the side, put the team first and know what the team needs in that moment. If I can’t be a big part on the pitch, what can you do off it? How can you help other players? How can you still be you without acting and being disappointed?
“It’s difficult, but I think I’m getting the balance right. I’ve gone through dips and all sorts of emotions, especially being out of contract in the summer. There’s a lot of emotions throughout this season that have been different challenges to face and new challenges that I’ve never faced before.”

While Isak’s career has gone in one direction, Wilson’s has gone in another.
Fitness has been a problem, although Wilson has been injury-free since February. He has been available for Howe, but has rarely impressed as a starter or as a substitute.
The 2024/25 season ends with Wilson scoring one goal in 22 appearances across all competitions.
Now a decision must be made regarding his future, with Wilson’s Newcastle United contract expiring at the end of June.
Wilson could have triggered a contract extension, but did not make enough appearances. Instead, Newcastle are in talks with Wilson over a new incentivised deal.
It remains to be seen whether the forward will stay or go. Wilson was emotional after Newcastle’s loss to Everton, and appeared to be waving goodbye to the Toon Army with tears in his eyes.
While it would appear that Wilson has found a way to have an impact behind the scenes, he will surely want to be playing regularly moving forwards. That could result in a departure, as Newcastle begin to search for a new striker.
The Magpies have been linked with Liam Delap and Joao Pedro. The former is available for £30million, but Chelsea are favourites to sign Delap ahead of Newcastle United.
