The EFL place Sheffield Wednesday under an embargo while fans launch a GoFundMe page towards unpaid wages for May 2025.
The Championship club, faces a registration embargo from the English Football League due to unpaid wages for May, affecting players and staff.
This marks the third such embargo since the 2023-24 season began. The club and owner Dejphon Chansiri were charged with breaching EFL payment regulations.
Labour MP Clive Betts meanwhile has urged Chansiri to sell, accusing him of holding the club “hostage.”

Sheffield Wednesday finished 12th in the Championship last season, but a relegation battle is expected for the upcoming campaign unless drastic action is taken.
The GoFundMe page reads: “On Friday 30th May 2025 it was announced that staff at Sheffield Wednesday Football Club went with their wages unpaid. Some staff have been paid £700 – others nothing. It was communicated that staff wold be paid in full by Monday. It is now Tuesday and staff are still left unpaid.
“We’re raising money to support the hardworking non-football staff at Sheffield Wednesday Football Club who, through no fault of their own, have not been paid due to the ongoing mismanagement under Dejphon Chansiri.
“We don’t know the amount that is owed, nor do we know how many people are without the money that they are rightfully owed. We just want to try and help in the best way that we can.
“These are the people who keep the club running behind the scenes — the cleaners, the kitchen staff, the club shop staff, the office workers and more — many of whom are local, loyal, and rely on their wages to pay bills and support their families.
“As fans, we love our club, but no one should have to work without pay. This fundraiser is a way for us, the community, to stand together and show that we look after our own — even when those in charge fail to do so.
“All funds raised will go directly to support the unpaid staff. If you’re a Wednesdayite, a football fan, or just someone who believes in fairness and dignity at work, please consider donating or sharing.
“If the wages matter is resolved then the money raised will be donated to The Sheffield Childrens Hospital Charity.
“Let’s show the world what proper football communities do.

“Can we kindly ask that a member of staff at Sheffield Wednesday reach out to us so the funds can be correctly distributed accordingly. Note: The distribution of the funds will be dealt with by the staff at Sheffield Wednesday Football Club and not myself personally.
“NOTE: A member of staff at the club has been contacted and the message has been forwarded to HR and Finance. We’re awaiting their response re: the transfer of the funds.”

A fan said while on BBC Sheffield earlier this week: “This club never fails to surprise me. Right? There’s something new every single day, and that man, Chansiri, should not be seen in Sheffield ever again. He’s absolutely ruining the livelihood of not only fans, but hardworking, working class people who were the heartbeat of the club that keep it afloat, and you can’t even pay them correctly.
“The players, of course, have a bit of sympathy for them, but they’re on a higher wage than, you know, these people that are lower down within the club. How are you how can you expect them to sustain even living when they’re not being paid? And this is the second time in three months. Am I right? I think I am. That this has happened.
“It’s just not right for a club of our stature. And it’s again, you said it on the last call as well. It seems to have completely ruined our reputation among not just the Championship, but the English football, as a whole. You know, the name is just an embarrassment at the minute, and it’s terrible.
“We don’t know where we’re at. We’re three window ban, potentially. Rundown squad, rundown ground, top prices.”
Ron Staton: “You’re a Wednesday fan. You’re a very passionate Wednesday fan. You’re a regular phone caller to this program. What do you want to see happen now?”
Fan: I wanna see him sell the club for a reasonable price, a realistic price, and I want him to leave. I want him to to finally realise that it’s end game. And I want him to move on with his life.
“I hope he’s very happy whatever he takes on next, but he’s killing us. It’s killing us all. He’s not just killing the club. He’s killing us mentally as a fan base. We’re all cracking up. So it’s for the betterment of everybody. Just leave.”
Another fan said: “This has been coming for a long, long time. We’ve seen so many examples of, you know, paying for your season ticket in cash. We’ve seen so many examples of things over the last eight years where what you’re seeing now, it’s just all coming home to roost, in my opinion. It’s been coming for a very long time.:
Fan: “If he were to put his books on the table, some they would look at it and say, alright. You’ve had this business for how long now? 2015, 2016, were it? Something like that. So let’s call it ten years. And in ten years, you’ve lost hundred and £60,000,000. What is the value of the business? It’s not worth anything. Is it really?”
Fan: “Alright. The stadium might be worth something. Well, other than that, what is the stadium worth? You know, we’re not talking an Arsenal stadium, a Man City stadium, a Spurs stadium, and Old Trafford. You know, we’re not talking Everton’s new ground.
“We’re talking what some, you know, we call it the Old Lady. It’s got an affectionate partner’s art, but the other side of the city call it a rough bucket. You know, so this is the problem. You know, he’s proved himself to be completely incapable.”
