Southampton and Leicester have made contact over signing Everton goalkeeper Asmir Begovic, sources have told Football Insider.
The 38-year-old will be a free agent when his contract at Goodison Park expires at the end of the month after the Toffees’ confirmed his departure.
Southampton and Leicester have both registered their interest in Begovic.
Leicester are seeking to add to their goalkeeping department having seen Danny Ward and Daniel Iversen both leave on free transfers this summer, while there is speculation surrounding the future of first-choice keeper Mads Hermansen.
Southampton are also in the market for goalkeeping reinforcements with Aaron Ramsdale expected to move on following their relegation from the Premier League, while Joe Lumley has been released at the end of his contract.
Southampton and Leicester plot Asmir Begovic swoop
Begovic has emerged as a target for the relegated duo due to his availability on a free transfer and wealth of Premier League experience, where he has made 256 appearances.
He would likely be considered a second-choice option for either Leicester or Southampton, despite the speculation surrounding the clubs’ first-choice goalkeepers.
This comes after Football Insider revealed West Ham want to sign Ramsdale to compete with Alphonse Areola, leaving the Saints scrambling for a replacement.
Leicester’s departing second and third choice keepers have opened the door for Begovic’s arrival, and they are prepared to compete with their rivals for his signature.
Everton, meanwhile, have been considering Sheffield United’s Michael Cooper as a backup, but Football Insider revealed Cooper will turn down Everton to stay at Bramall Lane.
Jesurun Rak-Sakyi targeted at St Mary’s Stadium
Following their relegation from the Premier League, Southampton are aiming to bolster their squad with the intention of bouncing straight back up.
Former Man United chief scout Mick Brown told Football Insider on 12 June that Southampton want to sign Jesurun Rak-Sakyi from Crystal Palace.
Last summer, the Saints failed in their pursuit of Rak-Sakyi after seeing a £12million bid turned down, and he instead joined Sheffield United on loan.
Leeds had also been interested in Rak-Sakyi, alongside a host of other Championship clubs, and he has retained his highly-rated status despite a difficult season.
