No. 2 Georgia women’s tennis team won its third-consecutive Southeastern Conference tournament championship Sunday after knocking off No. 1 Texas A&M 4-2.
The Bulldogs secured their 11th SEC Tournament title as well as their second three-peat in program history, replicating a three-year title winning stretch from 2007-09. Georgia joins Florida as the only two programs in SEC history to accomplish the feat.
No. 74 Guillermina Grant and No. 22 Anastasiia Lopata put the Bulldogs ahead with a 6-3 win over Mia Kupres and Daria Smetannikov in doubles play.Georgia secured the doubles point after Aysegul Mert and Hayden Mulberry pulled through to take down Nicole Khirin and Lexington Reed, 6-4.
In singles, No. 54 Aysegul Mert and Mell Reasco extended Georgia’s lead to 3-0, both winning their games without dropping a set.
No. 2 Mary Stoiana bounced back for the Aggies with a huge 6-4, 6-3 victory over No. 1 Dasha Vidmanova.
Lexington Reed gave Texas A&M more hope after defeating Sofia Rojas 6-3, 7-5, but Georgia quickly responded with a championship clinching win by No. 85 Guillermina Grant over No. 102 Daria Smetannikov in straight sets.
Grant and Mert were voted to the All-Tournament Team for the Bulldogs, while Grant also took SEC Tournament MVP Honors.
Georgia has now won four SEC Tournament titles in the last five seasons, facing Texas A&M in each final. After the win in Auburn, the The Bulldogs now move to 22-6 all-time against the Aggies.
Georgia will take a short rest in preparation for NCAA Regionals, which start Friday, May 2nd. The NCAA Selection Show will air on April 28th with host sites and tournament brackets revealed for the upcoming 2025 NCAA Tournament.
