NORTH MYRTLE BEACH, SC – The North Carolina A&T men’s golf team shot a second-round 17-over 295 on Tuesday to finish in an 11th-place tie with Holy Cross at the 2025 Surf Club Invitational hosted by Appalachian State at the par-71, 6,604-yard Surf Club golf course.
Longwood won the tournament at 1-under 567, followed by App State, who shot a 2-over 570. First-round leader UConn placed third with a 4-over 572. App State’s Herman Huus won the tournament individually, posting a 5-under 137 (68-69—137).
Huus defeated Longwood’s Scott Jordan and Iona Sean Richards by one shot. Both men finished with a 4-under 138. All three men shot a final round 69.
A&T’s leader for the tournament was Camilo Marin. After finishing in a tie for 38th after the first round, Marin placed 42nd in the tournament, posting a 6-over 148 (73-75—148). Freshman Agib Hughes scored the lowest on the day for A&T, shooting a 1-over 72. Hughes’ 72 helped him considerably climb the leaderboard as he finished in an 11-way tie for 47th with a two-round 7-over 149 (77-72—149).
Freshman Javier Morgado finished among those who placed in 47th, by shooting a 7-over 149 (72-77—149).
Marin started his day on the par-4 eighth and carded pars on his first five holes. The next three holes saw Marin post a bogey, a birdie and a double bogey. His birdie came on the 357-yard par-4 14th. The final three holes on the back nine resulted in pars before Marin made the turn and the action heated up again on his card.
He started the front nine with a birdie on the 499-yard par 5 first before going bogey and double bogey. Two pars followed before Marin went into the red again with a birdie on the 158-yard par 3 sixth. His round and tournament ended with a bogey on No. 7.
Hughes’s solid round started on the par-4 10th. His day began with five straight pars before carding a bogey on the 15th. Back-to-back birdies followed, starting with a three on the par-4, 367-yard 16th. On the 548-yard, par 5 17th, Hughes carded a four to move to 1-under for the day. Hughes closed his back nine with a bogey before earning a birdie on No. 1.
After a bogey on No. 3, Hughes carded a birdie on the 516-yard par 5 fifth, moving him back to 1-under. Two of his final three holes were bogeys, accounting for his second-round 72.
Morgado’s second round included three birdies, all coming on the back nine, starting with a three on the 324-yard par-4 11th. He also birdied the 14th and 16th. Freshman Ignacio Zapata also shot a 77 on Tuesday. He finished the tournament at 12-over 154 (77-77—154). Freshman Pedro Pereira, who carded five birdies on Monday, shot 78 on Tuesday. He shot a 9-over 151 for the tournament (73-78—151).
The A&T men return to competition Monday, March 24 when they begin play the Bridgestone Invitational in Napa Valley, Calif. The tournament will conclude on Tuesday, March 25.
