Newcastle United are suddenly poised to potentially suffer another major transfer blow.
We are still in the early stages of the 2025 summer transfer window, yet Newcastle United are already missing out on multiple top targets.
Liam Delap joined Chelsea despite interest from Newcastle. The Magpies have decided that Bryan Mbeumo is too expensive. Dean Huijsen joined Real Madrid, and could be followed out of the Bournemouth door by Illia Zabarnyi.
There are also concerns surrounding Eddie Howe’s active targets. James Trafford’s asking price is too high, and now Marc Guehi is a target for Liverpool. The Premier League champions are expected to make an offer for the Crystal Palace captain, despite Guehi being Newcastle’s top target.
Guehi joining Liverpool would be another blow in the transfer market, with Newcastle’s 2024 fear on the brink of being realised.
Newcastle United were worried about Marc Guehi in 2024
When Newcastle opened talks to sign the England international in 2024, there was one major concern.
Newcastle thought their Guehi bid would be hijacked, which is why they were trying to conduct their business away from the public eye.
Fortunately for the Magpies, there was no hijack from a Premier League rival. They had a clear run at Guehi, with Paul Mitchell having all the time in the world to strike a deal with Crystal Palace. However, that did not happen.
It has since been reported that Mitchell angered Palace during the Guehi pursuit, which does not reflect well on the man that is about to leave his role as Newcastle United sporting director at the end of June.
Not signing Guehi in 2024 felt like a missed opportunity. That was the view of TBR Football’s chief correspondent back in November, who spoke to Geordie Boot Boys about the chances of Guehi arriving on Tyneside in 2025.
“I believe the summer [2024] was probably Newcastle’s best chance to get him,” he said.
“He was one who Eddie Howe wanted and the club did a lot of work on him.
“It’s not to say a deal will not happen in the future, but it is going to be much more difficult in the summer with more clubs interested.”
What Newcastle will do if they miss out on Marc Guehi
As it stands, Guehi has not joined Liverpool. Newcastle United have not missed out on the 24-year-old defender.
However, interest from Arne Slot’s side is a concern, with the Reds now very much in the driving seat to secure his signature.
There will be despair on Tyneside from supporters, but hopefully that mood is not reflected within the Newcastle recruitment team. They have targeted Guehi for a long time, yet have failed to strike a deal. There has to be a reason for that.
It was recently reported that Newcastle have doubts over Guehi, so perhaps that has resulted in them looking elsewhere.
Despite their very public pursuit of Guehi, it has been reported that Newcastle have other targets that are unknown. They will likely come to the fore in the near future if the Magpies are forced to pivot away from Guehi.
