Sheffield United were the latest club to make a baffling call as the Championship managerial merry-go-round continued.
Although the Blades accumulated 90 points in the Championship and were narrowly beaten in the play-off final, Sheffield United sacked Chris Wilder to end his second spell at the club.
As part of their owners’ drive to move towards data-led recruitment, a change in manager was seen as necessary, even if Wilder’s promotion experience arguably warranted him being offered another shot at glory.
But with clubs in the modern era showing a lack of patience, many supporters were annoyed that Sheffield United hired Ruben Selles as his replacement.
Hull City recently sacked Selles after the Tigers survived relegation on goal difference, and now, he will get a chance to deliver promotion glory to Bramall Lane.
Rob Holding sent Chris Wilder a heartfelt message after sacking
The Sheffield United players adored Wilder’s methods, and they felt comfortable playing under him, even those who didn’t feature as much.
In February, the Blades captured Rob Holding on loan from Crystal Palace in a desperate attempt to add some defensive cover for the remainder of the campaign.
Holding was used sporadically by Wilder, only starting four times for the club while keeping one clean sheet.
Most players would feel aggrieved that their opportunities have been limited, despite joining on loan, but the 29-year-old had a respect for the manager that was unrivalled.
So, once Wilder’s sacking was confirmed, Holding wrote on his Instagram story: “Great human and great manager, can’t thank you enough for what you did for me this season.”
Wilder commanded a respect from his players that Selles will find difficult to follow, though judging by his reputation, he could also have a similar level of admiration.

Sheffield United fans are worried about Selles’ managerial CV. Having only managed Southampton, Reading and Hull City, three clubs who were all struggling when he arrived, they’re now wondering how he’ll cope in an environment that expects promotion.
The Spaniard will have his back against the wall from minute one, and the pressure will be high, but in those moments, he’s someone who can get the best out of his players.
During his time at Reading, midfielder Charlie Savage praised Selles for what he taught him as a young player in the dressing room.
“I had to get out of playing Under-21s football for Manchester United and experience playing men’s football. The learning you get playing for three points every week, you can’t mirror that,” Savage said.
“That learning is essential for any young player. You need games and minutes and to get that, especially under a manager like Rubén Selles, is really good.
“He is a manager who likes developing young players and gives them a chance. He showed that when he had a 16-year-old [Andre Garcia] who’s still at school play for us at the weekend; it’s a prime example that he will give you that chance. He wants to develop people’s games, and I’ve really enjoyed playing under him.”
