Rangers and Wolves are fighting to sign a 32-year-old defender

Scottish Premiership heavyweights Rangers have reportedly approached Championship side Leicester City over a deal to sign experienced former Wolves centre back Conor Coady.

The Light Blues are in the process of a huge rebuild this summer after appointing former Southampton and Swansea City boss Russell Martin as the club’s new manager after Philippe Clement’s exit in February.

They conceded 41 times in 38 matches last season, marking the club’s worst defensive record since the 2017/18 campaign when they finished in third position behind Celtic and Aberdeen. However, Wolves are also thought to be interested in re-signing Coady due to his immense leadership and qualities which made him such a fan favourite in his previous stint.

Rangers are very keen to strike a deal to sign Conor Coady this summer, according to reports from Sky Sports. The outlet explains the Light Blues have already made an approach to sign the 32-year-old as they aim to add valuable experience to their backline.

Coady is thought to be one of a number of players that Leicester are willing to listen to offers to this summer after their recent relegation to the Championship under Ruud van Nistelrooy.

The 10-time England, who was included in the squads for both Euro 2020 and the World Cup in 2022, is also thought to be a key target for former club Wolves as they look to improve on a disappointing 16th place finish in the top-flight last term.

Coady notably played 317 times for the Old Gold across all competitions between 2015 and 2023, all while serving as club captain for the majority of his time in the West Midlands.

Conor Coady played 22 league matches for a hapless Leicester City team that were relegated with just 25 points at Premier League level. It marked Coady’s first career relegation and a huge lowpoint just 12 months on from winning the Championship title. The defender is thought to be one of Leicester’s highest earners and is likely to be sold this summer, handing Wolves and Rangers a golden opportunity to bolster their defence with a proven leader with elite experience.

The Liverpool academy graduate has 198 matches of top-flight experience, the majority of which as captain of Wolves and is renowned for his excellent leadership in the dressing room. Coady is also known for having an excellent attitude in training and is seen as a player that drives high standards and performances which are desperately needed at Ibrox after a feeble attempt at winning the title last term.

“In the dressing room before the game, he speaks like he’s captain, despite the fact that he’s not been on the pitch yet – which is incredibly difficult to do,” Former England assistant coach Steve Holland told the Daily Euros podcast in 2021.

“He’s helped drive the club forward as captain, leading us into the Premier League and then European football, and had incredible pride every time he represented Wolves. While this move works for all parties, we’re letting Conor go with a heavy heart. He has given so much to Wolves over the years and will forever be remembered in the club’s proud history,” said Matt Hobbs at the time of his departure.
