In 2024, Sunderland announced that they were going to commit to a significant investment into the Stadium of Light in the coming years.
The plans aimed to improve the fan experience, and work started over the summer to implement these planned changes.
With that work now complete, is there anything else in the pipeline? Perhaps a significant increase in capacity?

May 2025: Could Sunderland’s return to the Premier League trigger an expansion?
In May 2025, Sunderland defeated Sheffield United in the Championship playoff final to secure their place back in the Premier League following a turbulent eight years away from the top flight.
The result at Wembley, which was won in spectacular fashion via a 95th-minute winner from Tom Watson, sparked wild scenes in the Sunderland end and has left many people in football saying that the Premier League will be better off for having the Black Cats and their large support back in it.
The huge influx of cash from a) winning the playoffs and b) now being a Premier League outfit could make the club seriously consider an expansion to the Stadium of Light. While the average attendance at the stadium this season was the highest in the Championship at 40,000, this is still 8,000 shy of the overall capacity.
Next season, though, the club can expect a full house every week, and if they can survive for a year or two, then an expansion will certainly be on the cards. After all, there is a reason why the stadium was built in such a way that an expansion to up to 84,000 would be easily achievable.
A summary of recent improvements
Over the years, Sunderland Stadium has seen substantial renovations, primarily focused on boosting its seating capacity. While the club hasn’t provided much information on further enhancements lately, the installation of a 5G network is expected to enhance the atmosphere at the Stadium of Light, particularly during match days.
Other recent improvements include undersoil heating and safe standing zones being installed at the Stadium of Light.
Stadium of Light expansion plans
The most significant detail from the upgrade plans is the addition of 2,000 safe-standing seats in the Roker End and 1,000 in the North Stand Upper. Sunderland fans have long urged the club to explore safe standing, and now their request has been met. Rail seating is prevalent in the Premier League, with over half of the 20 clubs implementing it in their home venues.
In a club statement, Sunderland mentioned: “These improvements will enhance the atmosphere and emphasize the Roker End as our iconic home stand, while also ensuring a safer environment for our supporters.”
Installation work on these safe-standing areas took place in July 2024.
Biggest investment in the stadium ‘for more than 20 years’
A new PA system and floodlighting have also been installed, alongside the introduction of safe standing. A new playing surface with undersoil heating is also set to be installed as part of the overall renovation of the 27-year-old stadium.
Sunderland said: “The exciting developments represent the greatest level of investment in the Club’s stadium for more than 20 years, and it will result in a transformational impact on the matchday experience.”
Last summer, the club invested significantly in the stadium’s hospitality spaces, upgrading Quinn’s Sports Bar, the Montgomery Suite, and the Business Lounge.
Sunderland chairman comments on investment programme
Chairman Kyril Louis-Dreyfus said at the time of the announcements:
“Today, we’re delighted to announce that we are continuing a significant period of investment to develop the Stadium of Light, with the next phase set to be completed before the start of the new season. These upgrades signify a dramatic shift in our approach to the matchday experience and each development will bring lasting benefits to our loyal supporters.
“The improvements we are making will enhance matchday now and in the future, and we can’t wait to experience them side by side with our fans when we return to the Stadium of Light for the new season.”
Stadium of Light expansion: What next?
While the work undertaken this summer was necessary to bring the club forward into modern times, an actual Stadium of Light expansion in terms of a capacity increase seems unlikely.
The stadium is currently the biggest in the Championship, with a capacity of over 48,000. Still, if they are to secure promotion to the Premier League and re-establish themselves as a top-flight club, the owners may consider expanding.
There are 35,000 season ticket holders at the Stadium of Light, a very healthy number for a Championship club. The demand for tickets would rise, too, should the Black Cats return to the big time.
FGG says: A step forward for Sunderland
Sunderland has continued to increase the stadium’s capacity over the years, but work on the actual capacity seems to be the next break point. While not confirmed, it’s very likely that the club will wait until they are back in the Premier League before investing large sums in increasing the capacity of the Stadium of Light.
Even then, there will always be question marks around whether Sunderland have the fanbase to demand a stadium bigger than the one they currently have. Empty seats were commonplace during the club’s final few seasons in the Premier League last time around, so being in the top flight perhaps won’t be the instant fix the hierarchy believes it will be.
