Stoke City have missed out on the signing of free agent centre back Harry Darling.
The 25-year-old, who has been linked with the Potters as Mark Robins looks to bolster his defensive options, has decided to join Championship rivals Norwich City after leaving Swansea City.
He has signed a three-year contract, with the option of another season, and becomes the Canaries’ third signing of the summer.
Stoke, who have Ben Wilmot, Ben Gibson and Bosun Lawal as options – with Jaden Dixon is leading a queue of talented defenders emerging from the academy – are looking to add depth after Ashley Phillips’ loan ended and Michael Rose was released.
Indeed Darling, who was linked with big-spending Birmingham City and Wrexham as well as former Swansea manager Russell Martin’s Glasgow Rangers, was one of the most sought-after free agent signing of the summer.
In the end he did opt for a renunion with a former manager – newly-appointed Norwich boss Liam Manning and told their website: “I’m delighted, it’s been a long time coming after a lot of conversations. I’m happy to finally get it sorted and I’m looking forward to getting started.
“Liam being in charge, I worked with him before at MK Dons so I didn’t need convincing too much about the style of play. I really enjoyed it last time working with him.”
Norwich sporting director Ben Knapper said: “We’re absolutely thrilled to get this deal over the line. There was of course big competition for Harry’s signature, so we’re delighted to secure his services and it’s great that he sees us as the best place to commit his long-term future to.
