Luton Town new signing George Saville can be a key piece in the side if they are to achieve promotion back to the Championship.
Luton Town had a disastrous 2024/25 season, finishing 23rd in the Championship table and suffering their second consecutive relegation. LTFC lost 5-3 to West Brom on the final day to confirm their place in League One next campaign.
Matt Bloomfield took charge at Kenilworth Road in January this year after leaving Wycombe Wanderers. The 41-year-old signed on a three-and-a-half-year deal, with the Hatters sat in 20th at the time of his appointment.
Bloomfield’s side only managed six league wins since his arrival, and the Hatters’ head coach will need some better fortune if he is to help his squad return to the Championship.
Luton Town announced the signing of Millwall midfielder George Saville last week after the expiry of his contract. The 32-year-old was in his fourth spell with the Lions and spent over seven years at The Den.
The Northern Irish international has been a consistent starter during his last spell in South London and made 45 Championship appearances last campaign. With LTFC set to lose a few key players in the summer, Saville could play a huge role in their bid for success in the upcoming season.
Saville will stand out in League One
It would have been a difficult decision for Saville to turn down Championship football next season as he still possesses the quality to make an impact for a side in that division.
The wealth of experience the 32-year-old carries with him will be invaluable in League One and will make the difference for Luton Town next campaign.
While the former Millwall man may not be able to play Saturday and Tuesday every week now, his natural ability will shine at this level and the midfielder will more than likely become a fan favourite at Kenilworth Road.
Promotion likely for Luton Town?
The competition for promotion in League One gets fiercer each season as the quality of teams continues to rise, whether it be from relegated Championship sides or promoted League Two outfits.
Head coach Bloomfield left Wycombe with the Chairboys in 2nd in League One, so he has some experience with knowing how to be successful in the division.
LTFC will need to regain their identity if they are to contend for promotion next season, and with Saville playing a key role, they could well find themselves back in the Championship this time next year.
