‘Truly believe it’… Leeds United fans have a clear message for Wrexham as Dragons eye Joe Gelhardt signing

Wrexham’s summer transfer business is underway with the signing of Ryan Hardie. Already, Dragons fans are wondering who might be next.

Wrexham have completed the signing of Ryan Hardie who joins from Plymouth Argyle following their relegation from the Championship, and Phil Parkinson will hope that his experience in the second tier will serve Wrexham well next season.

It marks the start of a crucial summer transfer window for Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney’s side and one that could see a lot of new names arrive at the Racecourse.

The list of Wrexham transfer targets continues to grow and one name that’s on it, and has been for some time in fact, is Leeds United striker Joe Gelhardt.

The latest on Wrexham’s interest in Leeds United’s Joe Gelhardt

Back in January, Wrexham wanted to sign Gelhardt on loan from Leeds United. But the 23-year-old joined Hull City instead, going on to score five goals in 20 Championship games whilst becoming a fan favourite at the MKM Stadium.

More recent reports have revealed how Wrexham have retained their interest in Gelhardt who looks poised to leave Leeds United this summer, following the club’s promotion to the Premier League.

Wrexham aren’t alone in their interest, though. Hull City are keen to re-sign Gelhardt on a permanent deal this summer, along with a handful of other Championship clubs.

Leeds United fans give their verdict on Joe Gelhardt to Wrexham

Leeds paid £1million to sign Gelhardt from Wigan Athletic in 2020. There were high hopes that the striker would fulfil his potential at Elland Road but that’s not been the case, owing to a number of reasons: changes in managers, Leeds being in and out of the Premier League and so on.

But Leeds United fans are convinced that Gelhardt can become a prolific striker given a proper run in a first-team somewhere. Reacting to his links to Wrexham, one Leeds fan posted: “Wrexham would be a good move for Joffy. Needs to play week-in and week-out.”

Similar comments read: “That would be a great signing for them and a good move for Joe,” and also: “Joffy will be quality addition for anyone at that level.”

It’s clear that Leeds fans sympathise with Gelhardt and that they still think he’s a player with quality, and plenty of potential.

“If Gelhardt has one to two seasons playing week-in, week-out, he will end up in the Premier League!” added another Leeds supporter. “Truly believe it.” This fan added: “Hope he finds a good home.”

Gelhardt remains under contract at Elland Road until 2027. But Leeds United are already reported to be open to a sale this summer, with Gelhardt expected to cost up to £3million, per previous reports.
