The University of North Carolina (UNC) football program has made significant strides in strengthening its defensive line by securing commitments from several highly regarded recruits and transfers for the 2025 season. Under the leadership of head coach Bill Belichick, the Tar Heels have successfully bolstered their front seven, aiming to enhance their defensive prowess and competitiveness in the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC).
Commitment of Four-Star Defensive End Austin Alexander
One of the standout additions to the Tar Heels’ defensive line is four-star defensive end Austin Alexander from Cooper High School in Burlington, Kentucky. Alexander is recognized as the No. 27 overall defensive lineman in the 2025 recruiting class and the No. 3 prospect in Kentucky, according to 247Sports. In his senior season, he recorded 81 tackles, 19 sacks, and an interception, showcasing his dual-threat capabilities as both a defensive lineman and a wide receiver. His commitment to UNC adds a dynamic edge rusher to the team’s defensive lineup.
Addition of Defensive Tackle Devin Ancrum
In April 2024, UNC secured a commitment from defensive tackle Devin Ancrum, a 6-foot-2, 295-pound prospect from Mill Creek High School in Hoschton, Georgia. Ancrum is considered a valuable addition to the Tar Heels’ defensive front, bringing size and strength to the interior line. His commitment further solidifies the team’s defensive line depth for the upcoming season.
Transfer Influx: C.J. Mims and Melkart Abou-Jaoude
To further enhance the defensive line, UNC has turned to the transfer portal to bring in experienced players. Defensive tackle C.J. Mims, a 6-foot-2, 305-pound player from East Carolina, committed to the Tar Heels in December 2024. Mims brings three years of collegiate experience and is expected to contribute immediately to UNC’s defensive efforts.
Additionally, defensive lineman Melkart Abou-Jaoude transferred from Delaware, where he played in 11 games during the 2024 season, recording 24 tackles, 9.5 tackles for loss, and 6.5 sacks. His proven ability to disrupt opposing offenses adds depth and experience to UNC’s defensive line rotation.
Defensive End Gus Ritchey and Defensive Tackle Malik Brooks
In August 2023, UNC received a commitment from defensive end Gus Ritchey, a 6-foot-5, 250-pound prospect known for his pass-rushing abilities. Ritchey’s commitment adds a promising edge rusher to the Tar Heels’ defensive lineup.
Defensive tackle Malik Brooks, a transfer from California, also joined the Tar Heels’ defensive line. Standing at 6-foot-4 and weighing 290 pounds, Brooks brings size and strength to the interior line, providing additional depth and experience.
Defensive End Smith Vilbert’s Transfer from Penn State
In March 2025, defensive end Smith Vilbert transferred from Penn State to UNC. Vilbert, a 6-foot-6, 285-pound player, appeared in all 16 games for the Nittany Lions during the previous season, recording 12 tackles, 1.5 sacks, and two forced fumbles. His experience in high-pressure games, including College Football Playoff appearances, brings a wealth of knowledge and leadership to the Tar Heels’ defensive front.
Defensive Tackle Pryce Yates’ Transfer from UConn
Defensive tackle Pryce Yates, a 6-foot-4, 265-pound player from UConn, committed to UNC in January 2025. Yates earned defensive MVP honors in the Fenway Bowl after recording a sack and three tackles for loss against the Tar Heels. His performance in that game highlighted his potential, and his addition to the defensive line is expected to bolster UNC’s interior defense.
Defensive End Yasir Smith’s Commitment
In February 2025, defensive end Yasir Smith from Summerville High School in South Carolina committed to UNC. Smith, a 6-foot-5, 265-pound prospect, recorded 43 tackles, including 14.5 for a loss and 10 sacks during his senior season. His commitment adds another promising edge rusher to the Tar Heels’ defensive lineup.
