In his first public comments regarding Tennessee’s quarterback competition, head coach Josh Heupel emphasized that the starting position is open and must be earned through performance. At the Big Orange Caravan event in Memphis on April 29, Heupel stated, “We’ve got the opportunity to have a great competition at the quarterback position. I like the skill sets of the guys that are in there. I like their mindset. You’ve got to learn it, earn it and go take the job. The standard is to have a guy who is ready to play at a championship level.”
Joey Aguilar, a transfer from UCLA who previously starred at Appalachian State, is among the contenders for the starting role. Heupel praised Aguilar’s experience and abilities, noting, “He’s got starts. He’s played at a high level. He’s got the ability to throw the ball vertically. He’s accurate and on time in the intermediate passing game. He has the ability to use his feet to extend plays and in the quarterback run game, too.”
Aguilar will compete with redshirt freshman Jake Merklinger and incoming freshman George MacIntyre. Merklinger, a former four-star recruit, saw limited action in the previous season, while MacIntyre, also a four-star recruit, enrolled in January. The competition intensified following the transfer of Nico Iamaleava to UCLA amid disputes over NIL compensation.
Aguilar expressed enthusiasm about joining Tennessee, stating on social media, “I’m looking forward to being a part of the traditions, the fans, and the legacy of winning at Tennessee. I’m ready to get to work, compete at the highest level and build something special with my teammates and coaches. I can’t wait to get to Rocky Top! I’m ready to Give My All for Tennessee.”
As the Vols prepare for the upcoming season, the quarterback position remains a focal point, with Aguilar, Merklinger, and MacIntyre vying for the starting role.
